Rifugio Sapienza is the mountain station on the southern side of Etna, at 1,900 metres: the point where the road from Catania ends and where the cable car, the bars and the tour operators are. Where the tour starts
The meeting point is La Baita 3L Ski-Lab, on Piazzale Rifugio Sapienza, in the municipality of Nicolosi. It is the same square where the road from Nicolosi ends and where you find the cable car base station, the bars and the shops: once you reach the square you have arrived, there are no further turns to look for.
Getting there by car from Catania
From Catania you drive up the SP92 through Nicolosi: about 35 kilometres and an hour and a quarter, up to an hour and a half when traffic leaving the city is heavy. Do not rush it. The last stretch is a series of hairpins through pine woods and historic lava flows, with signs marking the year of each eruption — it is one of the most scenic drives in Sicily.
Parking at the square
Parking on Piazzale Rifugio Sapienza is on blue lines, which means it is paid. Bring some coins: it is the one cost that catches out visitors who expect free parking on a mountain.
Getting there by bus from Catania
If you are not driving, AST runs a direct line. The bus leaves from Piazza Papa Giovanni XXIII, in front of Catania Centrale railway station, at 8:15, and returns from Rifugio Sapienza at 16:30. The ride takes about two hours and the ticket is around €6.60 return. Timetables change with the season, so check the official AST website before you travel: missing the return bus up here leaves you without easy alternatives.
The quad tour that starts here
Our Etna Quad Experience lasts 1 hour 45 in total: ten minutes of briefing and 1 hour 35 of actual riding. You cross lava flows, enter a lava cave and reach landscapes that look genuinely lunar, with views down to the sea on clear days.
The price is €110 per quad, not per person: two people can ride the same machine, so as a couple you split the cost. You only need a category B driving licence, and the quads are automatic Anther A500 — no gears to worry about, no previous experience required. Helmet, insurance and guide are included.
What else is up there
The Etna cable car departs from the same square and climbs towards 2,500 metres: it is an independent service with its own ticket. Next to it are the Silvestri Craters, cones formed in the 1892 eruption, which you can visit on foot with a €5 per person entrance ticket. An easy path takes you to the rim in a few minutes.
Neither the cable car nor the Silvestri Craters are part of the quad tour — we say so plainly because they are the two most common questions at booking time. What to wear at 1,900 metres
You are at altitude and on a quad you have the wind on you: even in August it is not the temperature you left in Catania. Always bring a sweatshirt or a windproof jacket, and gloves in spring and autumn. Mountain weather changes fast: it can be sunny on the square and cloudy higher up half an hour later. Closed shoes, always, and sunglasses — the black volcanic sand reflects a lot of light.
Frequently asked questions
Do quad tours run all year round?
Yes. The landscape changes, the experience does not: in winter the black lava is covered in snow and it is a sight in itself. If the weather makes riding unsafe, your booking is rescheduled.
Do I need experience to ride the quad?
No. The machines are automatic, the group is always led by a guide and the pace suits everyone. A category B licence is required to drive.
Can two people share one quad?
Yes, and the price stays €110 per quad. The licence holder drives, the passenger sits behind with their own helmet.
How long should I spend at Rifugio Sapienza?
Half a day covers the drive up, the quad tour and a stop on the square. A full day lets you add the cable car or the Silvestri Craters and lunch at altitude, with a stop in Nicolosi on the way down.
